Police in India have arrested five people after an attack on some Nigerian students.
The students were attacked by a mob on the outskirts of New Delhi.
The incident took place as a crowd of protesters outside the mall demonstrated against the death of a local teenager due to a drug overdose, local Police say.
Locals suggest that the boy had died after the Nigerians forced him to take drugs.
“They were using brick to knock the glass, trying to open the door, me and my brother, just me and my brother, we were trying to draw the door back, so we could not withstand it, they broke the door and my brother came out. They were hitting my brother, I have to run inside again, there was a small room where you change when you buy clothes (unintelligible). I used my body to press the door and to close the door,”
India’s External Affairs Minister has assured of a fair and impartial trial, adding an immediate action will be taken.
“If they don’t want us in this country, they should let us know. We will go back to our country and Indian embassy should come back, our embassy should go back. There should be no issue of visa; we will stay in our country,”
The attacks are on the back of similar ones on African nationals. Last year, several Africans were beaten up in New Delhi and a Congolese man was also stoned to death.
